Sales of two- and four-wheel drive tractors were up 9.8 percent to 19,346 units compared with the same month a year ago, but are off 1.3 percent at 177,199 units since the start of the year, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. Including combine sales, the total topped last year's results for the first time since the March report.

September sales of under 40-horsepower two-wheel drive tractors rose 10.4 percent to 11,593 units, while the 40- to 100-horsepower tractor sales increased 8.3 percent to 6,287 units, according to the trade group.

Sales of two-wheel drive tractors with 100-horsepower or more were up 5.7 percent from last year to 1,191 units, and overall two-wheel drive sales were up 9.4 percent, the association said.

Sales of four-wheel drive tractors in September surged 47.1 percent to 275 units, the association said. Sales of combines rose 24.9 percent to 1,233 units.

Separately, Deere & Co.(DE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said in its monthly recorded announcement that sales of its row crop tractors slipped by "a single digit" percentage, in contrast to what it said was an industry-wide gain of 9 percent.

Deere also said that demand for its four-wheel drive tractors grew more slowly than the market, while its combine sales were up "more than the industry."

Shares of Deere on Tuesday fell 91 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $59.57 on the New York Stock Exchange. (Additional reporting by Pascal Pinck in Los Angeles)
